Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers were looking like a shoo-in for one of the two wild card spots in the National League when they entered August with a 63-47 record through their first 110 games. A 5-10 slump over Milwaukee’s next 15 games however gave the rest of the league a chance to catch up.
Milwaukee has since turned things back around with a 7-3 record over its last 10 games, but only two games separate the top four teams in the wild card race with Milwaukee, St. Louis, Colorado and Los Angeles all fighting for two spots and Philadelphia not far behind.
Since the start of July, Chacin has led the Brewers to a 7-3 record in his last 10 starts. The right-hander has allowed one earned run or less in five of his last eight starts.
Washington Nationals
After suffering three straight shutout losses towards the end of last week, Washington’s bats have woken up to the tune of 7.8 runs per game over the team’s current 3-1 run.
The Nationals are all but out of the race for a wild card spot with a 67-67 record on the season, but this could be their last chance to make a move with a 10-game home stand that includes six games against Milwaukee and St. Louis, the two teams currently holding wild card spots. Washington is 14-10 against NL Central teams this season.
Friday night’s total is set at nine runs. The OVER is 5-1 in Milwaukee’s last six games according to the OddsShark MLB Database.
Fatigue could be a factor for the Brewers on Friday after they played back-to-back extra inning games in Cincinnati before traveling to Washington for this one. The series closes out over the weekend with Chase Anderson vs. Stephen Strasburg on Saturday and Junior Guerra vs. Max Scherzer on Sunday.
