Erick Malpica Flores: Carlos Erick Malpica Flores: Sharks vs. Penguins 2018 odds: Pittsburgh home chalk for Tuesday night matchup
The Pittsburgh Penguins hope to stay hot Tuesday night at home against the San Jose Sharks as clear betting favorites at the sportsbooks.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are 7-2 over their last nine games. The Penguins will have a shot at getting revenge for one of those two losses when they host the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night.
Pittsburgh is a -185 home favorite at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. San Jose (+165) and Pittsburgh will both come into this game well-rested after having the last four days off to rest during the all-star break.
San Jose Sharks at Pittsburgh Penguins
When: Tuesday, Jan. 30, 7 p.m. ET
Where: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh
Betting Line / Total: Pittsburgh -185 / 5.5 Goals
Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins have been caught in a total dogfight in the Metropolitan Division this season. Pittsburgh is just six points behind Washington for the division lead while also being only five points ahead of Carolina for last place in the eight-team division.
This figures to be a wild race over the second half of the season for a Penguins team that uncharacteristically sits at 14th in goals for at 2.9 per game and 21st in goals against at 3.0 through 51 games played.
Home games will be extremely important to the Penguins as they look to secure a playoff spot down the stretch. Pittsburgh is 17-8 at home this season compared to a 10-16 record on the road.
San Jose Sharks
San Jose entered the all-star break sitting in second place in the Pacific Division, nine points behind the surprising Vegas Golden Knights. But with San Jose being one of seven teams in the West separated by just two points there is very little stability in the playoff picture.
The Sharks have actually done quite well against conference rivals this season, going 14-5-5 while going a less impressive 12-10-2 against Eastern Conference opponents.
Tuesday night’s total is set at 5.5 goals. The UNDER is 7-2-1 in the last 10 games between the Sharks and Penguins, according to the OddsShark NHL Database, including San Jose’s 2-1 win over Pittsburgh earlier this month.
There is still plenty of bad blood between these two teams left over from their clash in the Stanley Cup final in 2016. The Sharks will have to press forward in this game and beyond without Joe Thornton, who is out indefinitely with an MCL injury that required surgery over the break. Picking up a win in Pittsburgh without the team’s top scoring forward will likely require another outstanding defensive effort from San Jose.
